For ground operations, the Pournelle carries two heavy lift spaceplanes capable of taking off and landing like conventional aircraft, and achieving orbit to rendezvous with the mother ship. Each can carry 10 metric tons of passengers and cargo. Cargo might include a large and small ATV, one of two dragonfly ultralight aircraft or other equipment as required by the survey team.

Large ATV
![]() Capacity for 8 crew and one ton of equipment, the large ATV has a 200 HP electrically powered motor in each of its 8 wheels. Power is provided by a supercapacitor array that gives a range of 450 kilometers in normal conditions. The batteries are recharged via a beta-voltaic source, and a completely drained power pack can be fully charged in 72 hours. The vehicle is atmosperically sealed, amphibious and is capable of negotiating extremely rought terrain. |

Small ATV
This light, open top 8 wheel vehicle is designed for short range scouting and transport. It can carry 6 crew in cramped conditions, is amphibious and has a speed of 50kph. Range is approximately 100 kilometers, and the beta-voltaic charger can recharge the batteries in 24 hours.. |
